The difference in building the boat strip planked and traditionally is mainly in the lack of a keel and stem rabbet in this modern construction method. In the strip planked version their is an inner keel, the planking is finished and then planed flat to accept an outer keel and outer stem. Additionally there are differences within the construction and the supporting structure. The strip planked version is very stiff, everything being epoxied together and the structure designed to support this stiffness. In traditional construction all of the movement of the parts and pieces needs to be choreographed to be independent yet work as one.
Interesting with this project has been seeing a lot of other builders wanting to build 93A traditional as well. Paul designs a great-looking boat, so it is not at all surprising. I’ve enjoyed being able to offer this service in connection with a design of Paul’s.
